Boren Awards
The Boren Awards provide vital funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to engage in intensive language and cultural study abroad. Importantly, all eligible applicants have the flexibility to either apply through the Regional Flagship Language Initiative or design and select their own unique study program tailored to their academic and professional goals.
Scholarships
The Boren Scholarships specifically support study abroad opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students in world regions that are critical to U.S. national security and global interests. These awards vary based on the length of the study abroad program:
- Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
- Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred duration)
- Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (available exclusively for STEM majors)
This tiered funding structure ensures that students can find support for programs of varying lengths, encouraging in-depth cultural immersion and language acquisition.
Fellowships
Similarly, the Boren Fellowships fund U.S. graduate students conducting research and language study in strategically important regions. The awards also depend on the duration of the abroad experience:
- Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred duration)
- Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
- Additionally, up to $12,000 is available for domestic language study, which students may optionally include to strengthen their language proficiency before or after their time abroad.
By offering this comprehensive funding, the Boren Awards promote long-term language mastery and cultural understanding, which are essential for future U.S. leaders working in international fields. Moreover, these awards serve as a pathway to careers in national security, diplomacy, and global affairs, making them a prestigious and strategic opportunity for dedicated students.
