UH 3500: The Constitutional and Political Legacy of America’s Founders

Taught by Dr. John R. Vile, Honors Dean and Professor of Political Science.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course has the distinct advantage of being an interdisciplinary course. This course will include discussions of documents in early American history and government, emphasizing individuals who helped shape the U.S. Constitution and the early American Republic. It culminates in on-site participation, observations, and visits to educational, cultural, and historic sites. Academically, this course will provide an experiential learning experience, allowing various majors to understand the foundation of American history and government from a scholarly and professional perspective.

During the week of March 7-14, 2025, some of the historic places this course will travel to in Philadephia, Washington, D.C., and Charlotteville, include:

CLASS INFORMATION: 

This study away trip includes seven class periods and seven travel days over spring break. We will meet on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. before Spring Break. We leave for the travel portion of our class on a Saturday. This course counts for three hours of interdisciplinary honors credit (UH 3500) or may be substituted for PS 4820. You may also participate in the trip without being registered for the course.

  • $2,280 to $2,830 (double occupancy)

NOT INCLUDED: 
  • Flights to Philadephia and from Virginia (transportation to and from airports will be provided in Philadelphia and Virginia), and students are responsible for booking their own flights [Fly from Nashville BNA to Philadelphia (PHL); then return to Nashville BNA from Regan National (DCA)]
  • Tuition
  • Most meals

$500 – due November 15 (last day of priority registration). 

You can pay your deposit online or at the Student Services and Admissions Center. Secure online deposit payment instructions:

  • Select “Study Abroad Payment.”  
  • Enter the payment amount; then “Add to Cart.”
  • Type the “Traveler Name”  (person going on the trip).
  • Type the “Student ID” number (M#).
  • Type the “Location or Reason” (Vile Washington DC).
  • Type the “Index Code” (590027-58362).
  • Click “Continue.”
  • Review the amount, then click “Checkout.” 
  • Enter your email address; then “Continue.”
  • Enter your credit card information. 
  • Click “Continue,” the form will ask you for the MTSU ID number.
  • Click “Review Order” then “Submit Order.”
Limited number of slots available.

Students do not need to be in Honors to take part in the trip, and you must have a 3.25 GPA to apply. Students can take part in the trip and not be enrolled in the course.
