Honors College
Study Abroad

Honors students should actively pursue study-abroad opportunities. They may apply up to nine semester hours from these experiences toward their Honors College graduation requirements. In some cases, students can count three of those hours as upper-division interdisciplinary seminar credit if the course qualifies and they secure approval before their trip. Overseas education enriches students’ academic portfolios, broadens their cultural perspectives, and sharpens adaptability skills that graduate programs and employers highly value. To ensure a smooth credit transfer, students must collaborate closely with Honors advisors and program coordinators before and after their trips.
MTSU offers three main types of approved study abroad programs:
Program Providers run short-term (summer, winter) and long-term (semester, academic year) options. These programs provide strong support and allow students to study alongside other U.S. and local (host country) students. Examples include programs through CIEE, ISA, and USAC.
Exchange Programs typically last a semester or academic year and offer students more independence while studying primarily with local (host country) students. Through these exchanges, students can have a unique experience, determining whether students pay tuition and fees to MTSU or directly to the host institution.
MTSU Signature Programs are faculty-led, offer a high level of support, and last 2–4 weeks. Usually held during the summer, these programs earn 3–6 credit hours and include the Honors Signature programs.
